Goddess Meenakshi, the mother of universe, who is also called as “Adi Shakthi”, the original source of energy is the divine consort of Lord Shiva, Sundareshwara. Goddess Meenakshi appeared in her third incarnation as “Meenakshi”, meaning fish eyed, the one who has eyes like that of fish. She is the goddess who destroys evil just by one look.
Goddess Meenakshi was Ayonija child (one born not from the womb) of a Pandyan king called Malayadhwaja Pandiyan ruling a small city by the name Manavur who was blessed by Lord Shiva. She grew up to be an embodiment of Shiva-Shakti. After the death of the king, she ruled the kingdom with adroit administration. In one of her journeys she went to the Himalayas and there, on seeing Lord Shiva, she decided to marry him. Many gods and goddesses came to witness their marriage.
At the wedding celebrations the gods refused to have the served food unless Shiva performed a magnificent dance for everybody congregated at the place. Thereafter Lord Shiva performed the dance of Chidambaram, the cosmic dance in front of his wife Meenakshi. It symbolized and merged all life force and beauty into one whole. Meenakshi then was merged with the Shivalingam and became the representation of life and beauty.
