Meera, well known as Meera Bai was a Hindu mystic poet and a great devotee of lord Krishna during 16th century who lived in the north Indian state of Rajasthan. She was born into a Rathore royal family of Kudki district of Pali, Rajasthan, India. She is mentioned in Bhaktamal, a poem in Braja language which gives a short biography of more than 200 Bhakthas, as she was widely known and cherished in the Indian bhakti movement.
Most legends about Meera mention her courageous disregard for social and family conventions, her devotion to lord Krishna, her treating Krishna as her husband, and she being persecuted by her in-laws for her religious devotion. She has been the topic of numerous folk tales and hagiographic legends, which are conflicting or widely different in details.
A huge number of reverential sonnets in intense commendation of Lord Krishna are ascribed to Meera in the Indian custom, yet only a couple of hundred are accepted to be bona fide by scholars. Numerous lyrics ascribed to Meera were likely made later by other people who appreciated Meera. These sonnets are usually known as bhajans, and are well known crosswise over India. Hindu sanctuaries, for example, in Chittorgarh fortification, are devoted to Mira Bai's memory.
